WHAT IS NARÇIL?
Herbal ivory or tagua nut, which is called Narcil in our language, is obtained from the seeds of some palm trees. Vegetable ivory got its name because of its resemblance to animal ivory. Species in the genus Phytelephas (literally "elephant plant") native to South America are the most important sources of pomegranate. Caroline ivory-nut palm seeds from the Caroline Islands, natangura dates from the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, and true fan dates from Sub-Saharan Africa are also used in the production of pomegranate.
Narcil is naturally white and has a fine marble grain structure. It is a very hard and dense material. Similar to stone, it is very difficult to carve with a knife. It was first used in button production in the 1880s. It is still widely used in buttons, jewelry and artistic carving. This hard-to-process fruit is also preferred for rosary making due to its natural beauty and texture.
